Finished mountain home with warm grey fibre cement lap siding and dark trim
Fibre cement costs more than vinyl, but suits mountain conditions.

Hardie plank siding installation cost in Alberta typically runs about $10 to $16 per square foot installed, with national ranges for fibre cement of roughly $8.40 to $15.00. For a whole house, that works out to about $12,000 to $22,000 for a bungalow and $18,000 to $32,000 for a two-storey, tear-off included. Labour is about half of the price, which is why two quotes for the same product can be thousands of dollars apart.

We install fibre cement siding around Canmore and the Bow Valley. The questions we hear most are “is Hardie worth it?” and “why is it so much more than vinyl?” Below we show the published 2026 numbers, break the price into material and labour, explain what you get for the premium, list the extras that show up on quotes and give you a checklist for comparing bids.

✓Key takeaways

  • Calgary 2026 guide: Hardie plank $10 to $16 per sq ft installed, split about $5 to $8 material and $5 to $8 labour.
  • National (HomeStars, updated August 2026): fibre cement $8.40 to $15.00 per sq ft.
  • Calgary whole-house ranges (tear-off included): bungalow $12,000 to $22,000, 2-storey $18,000 to $32,000, large home $25,000 to $45,000.
  • Hardie costs roughly $4.50 to $7 more per sq ft than standard vinyl, mostly because of labour, dust control and finishing.
  • Painting, trim, tear-off, flashing and repairs can move the total as much as the boards themselves.
  • In the Bow Valley, the premium buys fire resistance, stability in freeze-thaw and chinook conditions and a paintable, wood-like look.

Notice that Hardie sits between vinyl and cedar, and that labour is as large as the material. A plank that costs $6 a square foot at the supplier costs around $12 by the time it is flashed, blind nailed, trimmed, caulked and painted.

A worked example you can copy

Measure the wall, not the floor: width times height for each wall, less the openings. Say you end up with 1,800 sq ft.

  • Hardie plank at $10 to $16 per sq ft: about $18,000 to $28,800
  • Fibre cement at HomeStars’ $8.40 to $15.00: about $15,120 to $27,000
  • Standard vinyl at $5.50 to $9.00, for comparison: about $9,900 to $16,200
  • Add tear-off and disposal: the Calgary guide lists $1,500 to $4,000
  • Add repairs and extras: sheathing, trim, soffit and fascia, windows, if any

That is arithmetic on published ranges, not a quote. It is the fastest way to tell whether a number on your desk is in the right neighbourhood.

Why does Hardie siding cost more than vinyl?

The board price is only part of it. Fibre cement takes more time and more care to install, and each of these steps shows up in the labour line. Our guide on how to install Hardie board siding walks through each one.

Where the labour goes on a Hardie job

The steps that separate fibre cement from vinyl.

  1. Heavy handlingBoards are carried on edge, often by two people.
  2. Dust controlCutting outdoors with a HardieBlade, dust collection or shears.
  3. FlashingBarrier, tape and head flashing at every opening.
  4. Blind nailingFastened into studs, snug heads, tight layout.
  5. Joints and trimStaggered joints, flashed or sealed, caulked trim.
  6. Prime and paint100% acrylic topcoat within 180 days.

Vinyl is lighter, cuts with snips and needs no paint. That is why standard vinyl labour runs about $3 to $5 per sq ft in the Calgary guide, while Hardie labour runs $5 to $8. See vinyl siding installation cost for the other side of that comparison.

What affects your Hardie siding quote?

Wall area and house shape

A simple bungalow is cheaper per square foot than a house with dormers, bump-outs and multiple rooflines, because every corner, gable and window means more cutting and more trim. Two houses with the same floor area can differ by thousands.

Finish: primed and painted vs factory finished

James Hardie sells boards primed (you or your painter topcoat them) and factory finished (ColorPlus). Primed boards need a topcoat within 180 days of installation, using 100% acrylic paint, which adds a painting line to the quote. Factory-finished boards cost more per board but reduce on-site painting, though cut edges still need touch-up. Ask each contractor which finish their price includes.

Tear-off, disposal and repairs

HomeStars lists old siding removal at $1.00 to $2.50 per sq ft and disposal at a flat $500 to $1,000, and the Calgary guide shows $1,500 to $4,000 for tear-off and disposal on a whole house. If the sheathing behind the old siding is wet or rotted, repairs come on top. Going over old siding is not something we like to do, because you cannot see what is hiding behind it.

Trim, soffit, fascia and windows

HardieTrim boards, corner details, soffit and fascia are often priced separately. Replacing windows at the same time saves double handling, and our window renovation work is regularly booked ahead of siding jobs for exactly that reason.

Access and the mountain factor

▲Bow Valley note

In a mountain town, jobs are often harder to reach than they look: steep drives, snow, tight lots, scaffolding on slopes and short working seasons. In our experience these things add time, and time is what labour is charged for. If a Canmore quote is higher than a city one, ask what is included before you assume you are being overcharged.

×Watch out

A quote that says only “install Hardie siding” with a single number cannot be compared. Ask for a written breakdown of material, labour, tear-off, wrap and flashing, trim, paint or finish, and disposal.

Is Hardie plank worth the extra cost?

For many mountain homes, yes. Fibre cement resists rot, insects and warping, holds paint well and looks like wood. FireSmart Canada lists fibre cement boards among cladding types with superior fire resistance and notes that vinyl can melt, which matters in a wildland-urban interface like Canmore. It also moves far less than vinyl or wood through freeze-thaw cycles and chinook temperature swings.

Why homeowners pay for Hardie

  • Superior fire resistance according to FireSmart Canada
  • Resists rot, insects and warping
  • Holds a painted finish and looks like real wood
  • Stable through big temperature swings
  • Long product warranty when installed per the guide

Reasons to think twice

  • Higher upfront cost than vinyl, about $4.50 to $7 per sq ft more
  • Heavy and dusty, so it needs an experienced crew
  • Primed boards need repainting and recaulking over time
  • Poor installation can void the warranty coverage

If your budget is tight, our siding installation cost guide compares all the common materials, and the fibre cement siding installation guide explains the material more broadly.

What does Hardie siding cost to own after installation?

The installed price is not the whole story, because siding has a running cost. Vinyl has almost none, cedar needs regular refinishing, and fibre cement sits in between. Primed and painted Hardie needs its paint and caulk maintained, and factory-finished boards still need their caulk lines checked.

  • Repainting: exterior paint on fibre cement lasts a long time when the boards are primed and painted correctly, but every wall eventually needs a fresh coat, and south and west faces weather first.
  • Recaulking: joints at trim, windows and butt joints are sealed with flexible exterior caulk, which ages and should be inspected every year or two.
  • Washing: a gentle rinse each year keeps dirt and mildew from building up.
  • Inspection: check flashing, vents and the bottom course after the first winter and after any hail or wind event.
  • No rot repair: the boards themselves do not rot, so the big maintenance surprises common on wood are less likely, provided the flashing behind them is right.

Price per year is a fairer comparison than price per square foot. A wall that costs more on day one but needs less maintenance, resists fire and does not need replacing can come out ahead of a cheaper cladding that has to be redone.

How long does a Hardie siding installation take?

Time is labour, and labour is half the price. A small wall or a gable end is a day or two for a crew, a typical single-storey house takes a few days to a week, and a two-storey home with many windows, dormers and trim runs longer. Painting adds days if the boards are primed, and weather can add more. In the Bow Valley, wind, snow and cold mornings can push the schedule, so we plan the finishing steps around the forecast.

How to save on Hardie siding without cutting corners

  • Choose the simpler profile and colour. Standard lap in a common colour usually costs less than shingle panels or custom colours.
  • Bundle the work. Siding, soffit, fascia, eavestroughs and windows in one project save scaffolding and setup time.
  • Do the easy prep yourself. Clearing landscaping, taking down light fixtures and moving furniture off decks can save an hour or two of paid labour.
  • Consider mixing materials. Fibre cement on the front and a simpler cladding on the back can bring the total down.
  • Get three written, itemized quotes. Compare scope and finish, not just the bottom line.
  • Do not skip flashing or the weather barrier. They are cheap to install and expensive to fix.

How to compare Hardie siding quotes

  1. Same wall area and same scope in every quote. Ask which area each contractor used.
  2. Same product and finish, primed or ColorPlus, and the same trim.
  3. Ask what is behind the siding: barrier, flashing tape, window flashing and sheathing repair.
  4. Ask about dust control and how they cut fibre cement.
  5. Ask which installation guide they follow, since James Hardie updates its instructions from time to time, and warranty coverage can depend on it.
  6. Confirm insurance and WCB coverage and the workmanship warranty.
  7. Do not choose on price alone. The cheapest bid often leaves out the work you cannot see.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Hardie plank siding cost per square foot installed?

A Calgary guide from April 2026 lists Hardie plank at about $10 to $16 per sq ft installed, and HomeStars lists fibre cement generally at $8.40 to $15.00 (updated August 2026).

How much does it cost to side a house with Hardie board?

In Calgary, about $12,000 to $22,000 for a bungalow and $18,000 to $32,000 for a 2-storey, tear-off included. Large homes of 2,500 sq ft and up run about $25,000 to $45,000.

What is the labour cost for Hardie siding?

The Calgary guide lists labour at about $5 to $8 per sq ft, roughly half of the installed price.

Is Hardie siding more expensive than vinyl?

Yes. Standard vinyl is about $5.50 to $9.00 per sq ft installed in the same guide, against $10 to $16 for Hardie. The difference is mostly labour, dust control and finishing.

Does the price include painting?

It depends on the finish. Primed boards need a topcoat within 180 days, so check whether painting is in the quote. Factory-finished ColorPlus boards reduce on-site painting, but cut edges still need touch-up.

Is Hardie siding worth it in Canmore?

For many homeowners, yes. FireSmart Canada lists fibre cement among cladding with superior fire resistance, and the material holds up well to freeze-thaw cycles and chinook winds.

Can I install Hardie siding myself to save money?

You can if you are comfortable with heavy boards, ladders, flashing and dust control. Many homeowners prep and paint themselves and hire a crew for the wrap, flashing and hanging. Installation that does not follow the manufacturer’s guide can affect warranty coverage.
